Nick's Picks April 2020

April 2020 Edition

Home Access: Book & Reading Engagement

I'm inspired by the creative, impassioned efforts to further literacy connections for all during this current crisis. Here at TeachingBooks, we pivoted to offer everyone the most immediate literacy resources we could — and put them on our home page without requiring sign-in or needing to know a Username/Password.

Please enjoy these collections that bring children's and young adult books to life!

Such nimbleness and new learning is taking place these days. If you have any comments about this, or if we can be of any support to your communities, please ask.

Love,

Nick Glass, TeachingBooks Founder & Executive Director

Launching Today: TeachingBooks' Virtual Book Tour

TeachingBooks is excited to launch the TeachingBooks Virtual Book Tour, filled with enticing materials that give you opportunities to build personal connections with new books and get to know the people who made them.

Our inaugural post celebrates the release of Antoinette Portis' A New Green Day (Holiday House, 2020) — fun short poems about nature: a tadpole, thunder, an inchworm, mud, and more.

We plan on featuring a new book a few times a week, so enjoy and share this new feature on the TeachingBooks.net/Blog.

Behind the Books: Defining a Better World with Irene Latham and Charles Waters

For their second collaboration, poets Irene Latham and Charles Waters were inspired by their conversations with students to attempt an ambitious project — their Dictionary for a Better World: Poems, Quotes, and Anecdotes from A to Z (Lerner, 2020).

Read Irene Latham and Charles Waters' Guest Blog Post now.

Meet-the-Author Recording: Strega Nona by Tomie dePaola

The world of children's literature recently lost beloved author and illustrator Tomie dePaola. We at TeachingBooks have been revisiting this fantastic recording with him about how he created one of our favorite characters: Strega Nona. We love how much Tomie enjoys the character and story and are so glad he was willing to share that fun with the world!

Another fun Tomie dePaola contribution to TeachingBooks: he was our 2,000th name pronunciation.

Featured Booklist: Mathical Book Prize

Now in its sixth year, the Mathical Book Prize fiction and nonfiction titles engage kids and teens with math concepts. More than 70 titles have been recognized since its inception.
