Meet-the-Author Movie: Toni Morrison

This month we remember ground-breaking author Toni Morrison (1931-2019), who urged us to remember those who fought for a more just society. Watch our two-minute mini-documentary in which Morrison introduces her book, Remember: The Journey to School Integration (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2004) by showing the impact of the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision on the lives of young people then and now.

Meet-the-Author Recording: Lee Bennett Hopkins

We also remember good times with the celebrated poet Lee Bennett Hopkins, who also passed on this week. Hopkins appreciated many of the same values we do at TeachingBooks, including advocacy for the love of literature and respect for educators. Listen to Hopkins introduce his classic work, Good Books, Good Times! (HarperCollins, 1990)

Featured Booklist: Carter G. Woodson Book Award

Are you looking for books that discuss ethnicity and race relations in the United States? Finding literature that handles these topics with cultural accuracy and sensitivity can be tricky. That's why TeachingBooks features the winners and honorees of the Carter G. Woodson Book Award, sponsored by the National Council for the Social Studies.

Behind the Books: Gayle E. Pitman

As a high school student, Gayle Pitman heard her teacher say, "Jackie Robinson isn't a real historical figure." Read about how her reaction to this attitude led to a career of writing history books for children in this month's guest blog post.
