Nick's Picks April 2017

December 2017

Collaborative text complexity evaluation

Did you know that TeachingBooks.net has an innovative Text Complexity Toolkit? Our toolkit includes PDFs of rubrics for literary and informational texts and short videos with step-by-step instructions for filling out the rubrics. And there is a new section on diversity elements in the text, too!

Check it out by searching for a book title using the search box on the top of any TeachingBooks.net page. Once on the page for that title, click on "Submit your own qualitative measurement" under the orange Text Complexity box on the right side of the page.

Now you can view and contribute to the collected opinions of other teachers about seven distinct elements of text for both informational and literary books.

Always ask if we can help you strive to put the right book in each reader's hands.

Thank you,

Nick Glass, TeachingBooks.net Founder & Executive Director

Meet-the-Author Book Reading: Jason Chin on amazing discoveries

Whenever Jason Chin creates a book, he always visits the place first as part of his research. "It's really important for me to go on location," he says, noting that doing so helps him discover things he wouldn't through other research methods. This certainly was the case with his Orbis Pictus award-winning title, Grand Canyon (Roaring Brook Press, 2017).

In this Meet-the-Author Book Reading, learn how finding a fossil at the Grand Canyon helped to shape Jason Chin's newest book.

Listen to Jason Chin share the story behind Grand Canyon.
