Coretta Scott King Book Awards

With Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and Black History Month celebrations coming very soon, I thought it would be relevant and inspiring to highlight the comprehensive collection of more than 3,000 instructional resources TeachingBooks.net offers for the Coretta Scott King Book Awards.

Since its inception in 1970, the Coretta Scott King Book Awards have been given out 297 times. TeachingBooks.net has interviewed almost all of the living recipients, and offers thousands of lesson plans, book readings, and more for all of the titles and authors recognized by the awards.

Freely access and share these materials to bring to life these spectacular books that authentically celebrate our African American culture and heritage.

Always ask if we can help you strive to put the right book in each reader's hands.

Best, and happy celebrations.

Behind the Books: Terry Lynn Johnson on adventurous reading

Terry Lynn Johnson brings the excitement and challenge of the wilderness to life in each of her novels. While she expects that none of her readers have to face the same dangers as her characters, Johnson hopes reading her survival stories might help kids to be more resilient in their own environments.

In this month's guest blog post, learn how Terry Lynn Johnson's experiences with outdoor adventures and adversity inspire her page-turning survival tales of kids in peril.

Meet-the-Author Book Reading: Mike Curato on representing Cuban culture

As a car-loving kid, Mike Curato was thrilled to illustrate Margarita Engle's All the Way to Havana (Henry Holt 2017), an ode to the cars of Cuba and the ingenious ways Cubans care for these cars.

However, he did not know much about Cuba! Since it was important to Mike that his art accurately represent the Cuban culture, he traveled to Cuba to do research. There, he witnessed the creative car solutions firsthand as well as the "persistence and resilience of the Cuban people."

Listen to Mike Curato share the inspiration for his illustrations for All the Way to Havana.
