September 2019 Edition

A Village Supporting All Readers

I love advocating for readers - and here at TeachingBooks, all of us strive to give each reader a village of literacy stakeholders to extend their literary journeys. For example, each reader has connections to...

Author/illustrators. We produce original recordings with the creators of 20,000+ books so you can have them with you when reading a book.

Actors performing books. We license audio book excerpts so you can hear professional performances of books the moment you are reading them.

And today, I'm highlighting an example of us partnering with extraordinary content producers to change a reader's relationship with text.

Louisa May Alcott's Little Women is a beloved classic that resonates inspiration and empowerment. And on Christmas Day 2019, Sony Pictures is releasing a star-studded motion picture adaptation directed by Greta Gerwig that will bring new interest and tremendous excitement to the book. Saoirse Ronan stars as Jo, Emma Watson as Meg, Timothee Chalamet as Laurie and Meryl Streep as Aunt March!! So excited.

TeachingBooks is offering standards-based lesson plans from the Great Books Foundation. Sony Pictures also provided a Little Women Classroom Toolkit featuring discussion questions, recipes for Little Women-themed teas, and instructions for vintage games. Start planning your Little Women program now!

Sony Pictures provided the trailer. provided a ready-to-use vocabulary list. Audio book publishers provide a variety of excerpts.

And we also arranged for teachers and librarians to get free bookmarks and mini-bookmarks - while supplies last. So go get these today!

And in November, our newsletter will feature an original blog post about the adaptation of this book to movie from the executive director of Orchard House, Louisa May Alcott's home.

All this to say that TeachingBooks is actively partnering with many professionals to provide each reader with relevant and meaningful connections to books and authors.

Thank you.

Behind the Books: Eugene Yelchin

In this month's guest blog post, Eugene Yelchin describes a childhood encounter with a Soviet spy and how his feelings toward spies evolved from fascination to fear. Even more chilling are his contemporary reasons for exploring the topic of espionage in his new middle-grade novel Spy Runner (Macmillan 2019).
