Fabian a boy of Guatemala, grew up in traditional Mayan beliefs, but finds the courage to secretly plant 20 kernels of new maize, gotten from the gringos. While planting he uncovers a jade earplug of the Ancients, which leads him to adventures so unusual that even his father can see the old and new ways can exist together in peace.
