The “world-renowned” entomologist Edward O. Wilson is quoted in this fine volume as saying, “Environmentalists have been looked on as the dreamers of the world, when in fact they are the realists.” From its roots prior to the 20th century through what the author calls “many shades of green” at this point in time, Pringle summarizes what has happened so far and who made it happen. He points out various approaches to grassroots activism and formal governmental legislation, and enumerates how what was once “conservation” has expanded to become a global issue.
