First on 11-year-old Jason's wish list is becoming a concert violinist. His principal, Evan Carr, has always fostered that dream. When Jason discovers that Mr. Carr has AIDS, he is one of the few students who takes a stand against the town's intolerance. Jason nearly gives up when his beloved violin is vandalized in retaliation for his defiance. But a final gift from Mr. Carr reminds him of the importance of dreams, even those that are left unfinished.
