for Gon, the Little Fox by Nankichi Niimi and Genjirou Mita
From The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY)
A mischievous little fox named Gon causes trouble in a village near Nakayama, digging up and destroying farmer's crops. One day, Gon sees Hyoju fishing by the stream and true to his shenanigan ways, takes Hyoju's catch away. While Gon travels through the village a few days later, he realizes that his mischief might have caused the passing of Hyoju's mother and feels terrible. Gon regrets his actions and tries to atone for his mistake but things take a bittersweet turn. Readers will be able to learn about cause and effect through Gon's story.
