At seven P.M. on March 8, 1994, helicoptors dropped iff six people and thirty-three dogs at he edge of Siberia. led by explorer Will Steger, the team's goal was to cross the rice-covered Arctic Ocean--a brutal environment where temperatures drop to seventy degrees below zero, and bitter winds blow more than fifty miles an hour.

Traveling by dogsled and canoe-sled, the group found awe-inspiring beauty--and faced great challenges. They struggled over constantly shifting plate of ice, through powerful snowstorms, up and over towering ridges, and across rivers of open water. On numerous occasions, the team members or dogs slipped into the two-mile deep icy water, risking hypothermia. After four long moths, Will Steger and his team succeeded in reaching land on the northern edge of Canada.

Steger accomplished still another goal on this expedition. From this remote region, his team communciated every day with people around the globe. Using the latest computer and satellite technology, they brought the Arctic into schools and homes and focused attention on the pollution threatening this important part of the planet.
