Winter and Snow

Winter and Snow

  • Make snowflake crystals or cut paper collages as found in this activity guide for The Snowy Day after watching this complete video reading. Have students share or write about whether or not they like the snow, and what snowy day activities they enjoy.

  • Use Google Book Preview to read one or two of the poems from Winter Bees & Other Poems of the Cold. Ask students, what happens during winter in your area? Then have students pick an animal and research what that animal does to prepare for winter.

  • Discover additional titles and resources on these two curated lists:

  • Listen to this audio excerpt for Snowflake Bentley to hear how Willie Bentley worked to find a way to save snowflakes so others could see their unique designs. Then use questions from this lesson plan to contemplate snow and winter, and try creating unique snowflakes with this suggested craft activity.

  • Watch the complete video reading for The Mitten, a Ukrainian folktale and snowy adventure, and use the discussion questions or try one of the craft ideas from this lesson plan.
