Some of the Tarascan women of central Mexico create traditional needlework for sale at the market as one way to support themselves while the local fishing economy dwindles. A guild organized more than 14 years ago equips local women to become master embroiderers. Most of their embroideries reflect a happier time. The women honor their heritage by stitching images of life before Lake Pátzcuaro became polluted, before soil run-offs from mountains bare of trees filled the lake, before the fish began to die, before the wild ducks disappeared. Their dazzling stitchery shows an abundance of fish in Lake Pátzcuaro. It recreates Tarascan mythology and seasonal observances often still enjoyed.
