Scot Ritchie: Hi, I'm Scott Richie, and the title of my book is Follow Your Breath: A First Book of Mindfulness. I thought this book would be pretty useful now. I mean, we're going through some tough times and I've had personal experience using it, so it seemed to be a really good fit. Luckily, my editor actually suggested the idea and I had been thinking I wanted to do a book on this topic, but wasn't sure it would be accepted.

I think mindfulness is often thought of in maybe a new age category, but it actually does have the science behind it. That was really important for me sometimes using meditation and sometimes using visualization, these things actually can work and help people to relax or just become less anxious or really any number of things.

I think I like the drawing.
That sounds very simple, but the writing is one thing, when you're doing a nonfiction book, you have to present the facts and you don't want to overstate or get things wrong. But in the drawings, you can add a bit of levity to the writing and have some fun. There's five kids that show up in this series in every book, and I just get to have a bit of fun having them in different situations and bringing in all kinds of other people and different settings. So I guess I'm still a big kid that way, that the best part is still getting out the pen and paper and coloring in.

I hope people really can benefit from this. I have my own personal experience with discovering mindfulness and I know how useful it can be and I discovered it as an adult. So the idea of introducing it to kids, where they can make it part of their approach to the life, that would make me feel good to know that maybe I'm helping a bit with that.
