I.W. Gregorio: Hello, I'm I.W. Gregorio. And as you may have surmised, this is my pen name. In real life, my name is Ilene Wong. And it's so funny that, in retrospect, I kind of regret having a pen name, but, at the time when I first wrote my novel, I felt like I really needed one for a couple of reasons.
First is that I'm still a practicing physician and so I wanted to separate my medical life and my author life. The second thing is sort of embarrassing to say that I always hated my last name, Wong, because I grew up and people would make all these awful puns and a lot of them racist and towards the end of the alphabet, and I really wanted a name that was more in the center of the alphabet and less attention drawing. And so I realized that the easiest way to go about that would just be to use my married name which I didn't take. And that would do two things. Number one, it would still be part of my identity. And number two, it would make it so that my kids could legitimately say, "Okay, this is my mom," because they shared that name. And then I did use my initials to add who I really was to that. So that's the brief story about my name.
