Katrina Moore: Hello. My name is Katrina Moore and I am the author of Grandpa Grumps. Grandpa Grumps is a picture book written by me, illustrated by Xindi Yan, and it's about a little girl, Daisy, who is so excited because she's meeting her grandpa, her Yeh-Yeh, for the very first time. He's coming over from China for a visit for a week and she is determined to make this the best week yet. She wants her grandpa to smile. She wants him to do all these things and every attempt is a huge flop. Grandpa will not smile and she cannot figure out why Yeh-Yeh is so grumpy.

I wrote this book because I grew up with a grandfather who I could not really speak to. I grew up learning English and a little bit of Cantonese. And my grandfather came from China and he only spoke Cantonese and so we had very little words exchanged with each other and yet I was very, very close to him and it wasn't until I was able to connect with him in a way that didn't involve any words, that we were able to have that breakthrough. And so when I wrote this story, I really wanted to explore connections where words are the barriers and you have to find a way around that.

One of my favorite spreads in this book is when Daisy asks her grandpa to read to her. So: "On Tuesday, Daisy wanted Yeh-Yeh to read to her. Yeh-Yeh looked at her book. He looked at Daisy. 'Hm,' Yeh-Yeh grumbled. He handed Daisy his newspaper instead. 'Do.' said Yeh-Yeh. Daisy looked at his newspaper. She looked at Yeh-Yeh, 'Do some art?'"

And she scribbles a beautiful drawing all over his newspaper. And he has this horrified look on his face because she just drew all over his newspaper. And so they're really misconnecting the entire time and it's really funny and it's really silly, but it's also really heartwarming when they finally are able to break through.
