In 1816, Wilhelm Grimm wrote a letter to a young girl, telling her a tale which remained undiscovered until 1983. Sendak's images develop the tale as an allegory with Holocaust references. Multiple visual meanings add depth without intruding upon little Mili's wartime journey to be with Saint Joseph in Paradise before she returns to her mother. A landmark book. (Age 7-adult)
